Tesco sued over pineapple 'clunk'

A pensioner who was hit on the head by a pineapple while shopping is suing the supermarket.

Mary Raimo, 76, was knocked to the floor by the fruit, which tumbled from an upper shelf.

It was dislodged by another customer and struck Mrs Raimo on the back of the head.

She was later diagnosed with concussion and said she has suffered neck pain since the incident in Tesco in July last year.

Mrs Raimo told the Mirror: "I was in the reduced section for the fruit, looking at some on the second shelf. Another lady was looking at the pineapples on the top shelf.

"The next thing I knew - clunk - I got hit on the back of the head. I dropped my basket and staggered to the floor."

The pensioner claims the fruit was stacked badly at the Tesco store in the Lochee area of Dundee, which has since closed.

Her lawyer Alasdair Wannan said: "She is hoping for compensation on the basis that Tesco negligently stacked the pineapples.

"She says she is still getting headaches and neck pains and if that is the case we would be looking for several thousand pounds' compensation."

A Tesco spokeswoman said: "Customer safety is very important to us and we are looking into what happened. Our best wishes are with Mary Raimo for a speedy recovery. As this matter is in the hands of our insurance team, we're unable to comment further."

I'm certainly not judging, but make your own conclusions on this one.

She "was in the reduced section for the fruit."

"Has suffered neck pain since the incident in Tesco in July last year." Now, it might just be me, but what size of pineapples were they selling in that particular store? That must have been some serious concussion.

The 'giant' pineapple was "dislodged by another customer." So why are Tesco negligent in terms of improper stacking? I mean, how many ways can you stack a pineapple. Why isn't she seeking damages from the customer who struck her down with skittle-like missiles formerly called pineapples? She was "knocked to the floor by the fruit" - really!?! What height exactly did it fall from to become scud missile-like?

"Several thousands of pounds" of compensation sought - really!!! Now that really would be a bargain pineapple.

As I said, "This is not America" - sha la la la la.

Would several thousands of pounds be a cure to the neck pain. Would it mysteriously and miraculously disappear?

But remember - I am not judging - ;).

If you think I'm bad - can you imagine Frankie Boyle with this one?

Caveat Emptor: scud-missile pineapples!!!

No wonder the price of our essentials go up. That's probably why.

Testing of pineapples from any heights will not be appreciated by your supermarket. Also, don't try it at home. Remember to be nice to all money savers (including those buying reduced fruit). Th...th...that's all folks.

Any injuries, including minor cuts , should be put in the accident book.
If it becomes infected, and you lose time off work because of it they have pay you.
If it's not in the accident book, you get nothing.

Don't hold back - tell us what you really think.

Was it the woman's fault the pineapple fell on her?

On balance, was it the most sensible thing for Tesco to stack big, heavy items above a shelf which you'd imagine people would be bent over (thus less aware of what's going on above their head) examining produce?

Do Tesco have responsibility to take reasonable steps to make sure shoppers are safe while on their premises?

Think about it - America's got nothing to do with the issue, but well done trivialising the issue of some poor old dear getting belted on the head while out shopping. :T
Oh come on, don't be silly.

The pineapple was dislodged by a customer; I really can't see why Tesco are being sued for this. They might as well not place anything above chest height.

Would the lady have sued Tesco if the pineapples were placed low and she hurt her back bending over for it?

Exactly - where does it end?
