What's up with my oven?!

It just took me over half an hour to get my oven lit - any ideas? Is it just on its last legs?

I've not had a gas oven before so I don't know anythign about them - my landlord lives with me but is away on holiday for ages.

How were you trying to light it? With a match or does it have an ignition switch?

If an ignition switch, could you hear it clicking?

Could you smell gas while you were trying to light it?
  • The ignition is definitely working cos I heard it click and it lights hob and grill fine. Could smell the gas too.

It always takes a while but this is ridiculous.

Does it need cleaning? Perhaps the gas outlet was a partially blocked?

FF is right, it needs cleaning. Either the gas outlet is partially blocked so the gas isn't coming into contact with the spark, or the little wire the spark comes from is covered in grease so it doesn't actually create a spark.

I'm afraid you have to get your head in there, find the ignition bit and give it a good clean, sand paper, brillo pad or wire brush should do it. Just make sure some fool doesn't turn the gas on while your head is in the oven
  • Ahhh so simple! Thankyou :)

Try lighting it with a match or taper. does it then work ok?
