old (1974) endowment query

hi all,
was talking to my mum the other day about mortgages & endowments etc,
in 1974 they took out a £10k (wow!) 25yr mortgage, with endowment... 10 yrs later my dad was made redundant so they couldn't afford all the payments, so went to the bank (was Abbey National), and changed over to a repayment.
they subsequently paid off the mortgage in 1997, so 2 yrs earlier than should have (they always paid the same amount when interest rates went down).
however, they never had an endowment pay off - she has no idea on policy numbers or anything like that, i asked her if she'd ever spoken to Abbey about it, but she points out the mortgage has been done & dusted now for 12 yrs, they've since moved abroad, so she chucked all unnecessary papers...
i thought there must be some way of finding out?
does anyone know?
thanks in advance,
wobbles

Have you read Martin's article on finding lost assets:

If you read the article and follow the related discussion it should point you in the right direction for tracing it.
