Hi
My friend is in serious debt, almost ready to lose his home, He has a mate who practically lives off him and will not contribute to any household expenses etc.. Whenever I raise the subject of asking for something from his mate I am in the dog house. If I ask about my friends budget to look at ways of minimizing etc again I am wrong. I like my friend but I know it is only a matter of time before he asks me to lend him some money. What can I do to persuade him to stop letting things happen and tackle these problems head on? Im running out of patience with him. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I would suggest that he considers it none of your business. I would respect his wishes.0

Thats what friends are for, to help in times of trouble...
I think you have a tough challenge, and I guess you don't want to be there to pick up the pieces.
How well do you know the housemate, can you have words with him ?Live life...0 -
You have tried to point out the obvious and he has rejected it. The only thing you can do is accept that. If he asks you for money you can lend it to him and stipulate that you will only do so under the following conditions. Or you can point blankly refuse and give your reasons.
Either way you could lose your friend but it is whether you lose the money also.0 -
Sounds like one of those situations where if you lend money to him once, he will undoubtedly ask for more without paying you back.
The cycle will go round a few times with you lending more and more until you finally break, and the friendship ends.
Be firm the first time but without trying to lecture, just say you are skint yourself.
Good luck.0 -

You could say "no, perhaps you should ask your lodger" when the matter of time requests for a loan comes around. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0
