Joint Account after BR?

Hi All,

I was declared BR in Nov 08, i want to open a joint account with my boyfriend so we can save for a deposit on a house.
Will i be able to do this? Will it affect my BR? (E.G another account with 2x money in it?)
If i can, can we go to a normal bank and open one, or will i need to do it with the co-op or barclays? Oh and if it does go well, will there be restrictions?

Thanks in advance

Kay - it would be best to wait until your discharged at least. You'll get nothing apart from the basics until at least then and perhaps some time after. And you wont get a savings account without some bother either.

There will not be any restrictions (unless you are subject to BRO/U) after your discharge on anything, it will be solely down to the banks themselves to decide based on your credit file.

Personally, I would open a joint basic account now with Co-Op or Barclays. Open another one in your name with the other institution - so that you will be earning little green '0's on your credit file against them; they are important! You don't have to use the account, put £10 a month into it or small savings and use it like that rather than an savings account. Then after discharge, get onto the credit file clearing thread and start to sort your files out - can only be done after discharge. In a years time with a better credit file (not wonderful but better than before) you can start to look at other proper accounts - but bear in mind that some may still not want you and its going to be difficult.

A poster on here recently open NatWest account so you could try them. Be careful of trying too many as they will record a credit search on your file.
