training as an electrican/returning to college

  • A career for an electrician is generally speaking a practical one. The actual hands on part of the job is what appeals to a lot of people. There is however a considerable amount of study involved in getting the qualifications. However, dyslexia should not preclude success in getting fully qualified. However I suspect that in these circumstances anyone suffering with any learning disability would be far better off by learning through a private provider, where the group sizes are far smaller and there is more opportunity for support. A reputable provider will give a freephone tutorial support service for example. Larger class sizes in college with no additional option for support could mean a higher chance of dropping out.

Its all horses for courses, and what suits one doesn't suit another. But having all the information is I think a part of making the decision.

With regards to career opportunities in your local area (BTW roughly where are you?), have a look on jobcentre plus website and enter the the qualifications I quoted and see what jobs come up in say a 30 mile radius. That will give you an idea of what options there are.

  • Thanks - I assume anywhere that offers a C&G is properly accredited and reputable?

    Could you recommend any companies?

I ask because I'm a journalist and some universities offer degrees in journalism which aren't accredited by 'our' professional body, which can leave students thousands of pounds in debt and with a degree that won't lead to a job without further study.

I don't think he'd have any problems with the hands-on side of things - according to his mam he was re-wiring plugs at the age of five and had his own little screwdriver set, though why she was allowing him to do this is a different issue!

  • How satisfied are you that there is work available in your area?

Make sure any provider you use has Global Online Assessment (GOLA) system. This means exams are taken at the training centre.

Sorry I don't have any recommendations for the NE.
