Dirty tiles

Hi all, I hope I'm posting in the right place, I just thought that this seems to be where the most knowledgeable people are!

We're in a rented flat at the moment and in the shower are a few cracked tiles on the "lip" that you step over to get into the shower. They were cracked when we moved in, however I've noticed that the cracks are beginning to go orange! I'd quite like to sort this out, I've tried putting thick bleach on them but due to the angle they're at (slightly slanted towards the shower) the bleach is just running off. Could I mix the bleach with anything eg salt or flour to make a paste that will stay on? Or is there anything else that I can use? It needs to be thick enough so that it doesn't run off and actually stays to do it's job!

Thanks for reading :)

Caroline

You can mix bleach with flour to make a paste - it's one way of getting a reall horrid loo rim clean!

try bleach mixed with bicarb of soda to make a paste. Apply, leave on for a bit, then clean off with a toothbrush.

Make sure the room is well ventilated, as mixing bleach with anything can cause it to give off harmful vapours!

I did a full shower cubicle (cleaning the grout in between the tiles) using this method, and it worked an absolute treat :)

I find the mould and mildew sprays to be good for this kind of thing. The Dettol one you can get from supermarkets is good (it's in a bright green spray bottle) or the HG Mould remover is fantastic (that's in a white bottle and I think you can get it from Homebase, it's a bit dearer but it's brilliant). We're always having this problem with our shower cubicle as it was a right state when we moved in and the HG stuff was the only stuff that shifted it. You do need to be careful with bleach though as sometimes it can discolour the grout, turning it orangy brown. Not a great deal you can do if that happens, so it's worth going easy on the bleach and scrubbing it first - if it's that orangy goo that you get then this will deal with it.
  • Thanks to all, I've just tried the bleach and flour, if that doesn't work then I'll try the bleach and bicarb (I'll have to go out and get some).

Gingernutmeg, I tried scrubbing it yesterday, and I've tried the dettol spray, because our shower is an ensuite, I shower in the morning and we're not in during the day so it doesn't get ventilated properly, we had a lot of mildew, it seems to bleach it to a certain point but I was still left with quite dark grey marks on the sealant. And I tried it on the orange yesterday but it just didn't want to know! LOL. If the first ideas don't work then I'll try the HG stuff, not sure where our nearest homebase is, and whether it's accessible by public transport. *Wanders off to see if she can find out...*
