Our first landlady was pretty bad, she worked abroad so came over to the house whenever she was back in the UK.

We hated it, she criticised everything yet refused to spend money on the property to upkeep it. The house was furnished and she left stupid things in it like bowls of pot pourri and cheap nasty ornaments - she moaned that we stored them away! and criticised us for having our washing out etc. TBH we didn't appreciate her judging how we lived our lives and she didn't appreciate that we should have quiet enjoyment of the property.

The second landlord we had was a different story - he worked with my husband so we knew him anyway, he only came round once or twice a year to check everything was Ok or if any jobs needed doing. He left us alone and didn't pass any comments about how we were living our lives - much better.

  • 1st landlord, complete amature in scotland so no deposit scheme. got royally messed around and didnt know of this site back then so didnt know my rights.

2nd landlord, friend doing me a favour so nothing wrong at all. no deposit or anything like that as it was an informal arrangement. house kept as if it were my own.

3rd and current landlord. never met them. doesnt seem like we are going to meet them - we live opposite ends of the country. no inspections whatsover. landlord only used agency to find them tennants and manage themselves. contact via text message and phonecalls. the couple of issues we had when we moved in were sorted asap. gas inspection done when its supposed to and thats it, we keep the house as if it were our own. however the agency they used were useless to say the least.
Debt free 3 years early :j
Savings for house deposit - very healthy

We met both our current and previous landlords prior to moving in, when we viewed the properties. Our first landlord made a pretty dreadful impression - firstly because he was in his dresing gown at 2pm and secondly because he was cracking open a can of beer. That said, forewarned is forearmed, so when things proceeded to go pretty wrong (house was absolutely filthy when we moved in, debt collectors & bailiffs calling round) we realised that our first impressions of the landlord were bang on (however, at the time we were pretty desperate and had little other choice!).

I personally think it's good to meet your landlords because it gives you a chance to see how you will work in a potential business relationship and helps to establish each others' intentions and interests (e.g. are you both looking for a long-term rental, do they seem the type to act professionally with regard to issues such as repairs that may need carrying out during the tenancy, are they over-house proud, and so on). It makes me more comfortable, as a tenant, to know who I am renting from.

I've had very good experiences so far.

First place I rented was done through the landlord, so he was there to show me round from day one. I never had any problems whilst there, but if I had, he was on the end of the phone.

Where I am now went through an estate agent, but after that I deal(t) with the landlady direct. The first day of being here I had to phone her as there was no hot water coming from the shower, she arrived here within half an hour to have a look. I've spoken to her a few times since and she's always available. Not had any further problems though.

We've rented once, when we moved here from the other end of the country for MrsLA's work. I picked up the keys from the LA's and arrived at the property to find the landlords there. They were a middle aged couple and it had been his family home that had been let out since his mother died. They were charming and showed me how certain things worked and explained the vaguaries of the central heating etc. I felt very comfortable with them and all in all it was a pleasant experience. It also helped to have a mental picture of the people behind the official face of the letting agent.

My first landlords were a married couple who owned a building of several flats, professional but approachable, inspected the flat once a year and had no problems with them.
Second landlord was lovely, no problems with him and laid back but again professional.
Third landlord was my OH's cousin so pretty informal and a bit of a pain when it came to getting things done as i think he thought he was doing me a favour.
And landlord now is my OH's uncle (hmmm not only do i seem to of moved around alot i seem to be keeping me OH's family in business):rotfl:
but he is fine, lets me have 2 dogs and a cat, but saying that the house was an absolute wreck when we moved in and we are slowly but surely making in lovely.:D

Landlords are human beings, with the full gamut of personalities that one would expect from people in any walk of life....therefore asking what one's experience of 'meeting a landlord' was is a bit pointless to me. It's like asking 'what was your experience of meeting the mechanic who did your MOT' or 'what was your experience of meeting the woman at the library who stamped out your copy of a Douglas Coupland novel'

Of course I can wholly understand the question given the fact that some people on this board paint all LLs in the same vein as one would usually reserve for axe murderers.

My landlady seems a bit mental, but likeable. If I have a problem I ring her, she says "oh no" and "oh dear" a lot, then tells me she won't be able to help tonight/today and generally turns up five minutes later (I think she must be a worrier). She really does make me laugh... she also talks a lot and asks you lots of questions but doesn't seem to listen to the answers and half the time seems to have this "who are you again?" look on her face :D

I shouldn't laugh really, with the way my memory is going, I'm probably seem similar to other people!
