dishcloths - knit or crochet?

picked up a ball of dishcloth cotton for 69p yesterday to make some dishcloths - wondered whether a knitted square or a crocheted 'granny' square would be best - any recommendations before i start on one?

many thanks xx

You want to knit dishcloths? The Americans are mad keen on this sort of thing and there are literally thousands of patterns out there for them. Here's a link to start you off.

Question: can you use any yarn for making dishcloths, or does it have to be pre-treated in some way?

I ask because i have loads of 'bits' of yarn left from when i screw up projects (or when i mistakenly buy vile acrylic yarn from ebay!) and it grosses me out no end that The Mother and The Father , and The Flatmate use sponges (ew ew ew!).

If these two problems could become one *fabulous* solution, that would be amazing...

Knitting uses less yarn than crocheting.

Also, cotton is the best yarn to use as it is absorbs moisture and can be washed at a higher temperature.

I also use knitted dishcloths as flannels and have been known to knit pretty ones and give them as gifts with a nice bar of soap.

Just thought that I would share....

This is my favourite knitted dishcloth pattern:

I usually do it in one colour with whatever cotton yarn I have available.
Now that I have quite a few knitted dishcloths I keep a mini swing top bin half filled with weak bleach solution next to the washing machine, and throw the used dishcloth into it at the end of the day. When I am ready to do a towels wash the dish cloths are squeezed out and added to the machine, and the used bleach solution is used to clean the lavatory.

    Me too!
And I find the blog inspiring or depressing, depending on how capable I am feeling that day!
