Does anyone recommend any good chicken stock cubes that are cheaper than Knorr? Also any beef/chicken Oxo cube alternatives? Thanks.

Value/ Smartprice stock cubes are fine for most purposes - if you read the ingredients on the side stock cubes are mostly filler and salt anyway. For a good homemade soup you will need fresh stock which is easy to make from the remains of a roast chicken.

  • I've used the ones at both Lidl and ASDA (ownbrand) without problems - couldn't tell the difference to be honest.

I saw something on the Tv a couple of weeks ago that they are starting to make oxo cubes in the shape of an X instead of a square, They said it was because research had shown it would be easier to crumble !!!

  • Can you still get value/smartprice stockcubes?
I went looking for them a few months ago and couldn't find any in Sains, Tesco or Asda. I will need to buy more soon, so it would be good to know.

ASDA definately do them, as I get them regularly. Not sure about tesco/Sains as i don't shop at either very often.

Lidl/Aldi also have fairly cheap versions too (available depending on local store).

I usually save the stock from my chook and if I haven't got a lot then shove in a couple of Tesco's value chicken stock cubes They are about 19p for around half a dozen I think and if I'm making soup ect especially with onions and leeks then it really dosen't seem to make a lot of differance
  • My local tescos have stopped stocking their own brand vegetable stock cubes, and the cheapest alternative is very salty! Does anyone have a good alternative that is reasonably cheap? Thanks in advance.

I've found that Aldi sell 120g x 12 cubes for 66p --- beef, chicken + veg. Haven't tried them yet. How does Lidl compare? Anyone know? Thanks.
