Cleo1299, thanks, that article in The Independent is helpful. It captures just how off-putting the complaints process can be for a lay person, and gives some useful info.

If there anyone else has had cause for concern about the standards [or costs] private dentistry, it's worth a read.

I just remembered another organization, called "Action for Victims of Medical Accidents - the charity for patient safety and justice". They were very helpful several years ago for a friend of mine when she had a problem concerning an NHS hospital and failure to diagnose cancer. And see the thread on "Advice on Medical negligence", where AVMA is mentioned a few times.

I'm not sure how much advice AVMA are able to give about private treatment, but they run a 0845 helpline which should be able to tell you. Or you can email or write to them. Website can be found by searching on "action for victims of medical accidents".
  • kickintheteeth, would like to know if you are a dentist?
  • to toothsmith that is!
  • hi jugglebug, i noticed that you are a dentist and i was wondering if you could help? i recieve NHS treatment, i needed about 4 fillings but my dentist told me i was only allowed 1 done every 2 months! i told him to start at the worst one at the back because it had a massive cavity instead he filled the second from back, before the 2 months were up half of my tooth dropped off. i didn't want to go back to him as i had lost my faith in him and i was only with him because my normal dentist was on maternity leave. also he wanted to chare me £50 for a scale&polish. ihave since read articles on the web about dentists giving more appointments to get more money. i do not pay for my treatment as unfortunatly i am out of work and on benifits. i wondered if you could shed some light! thanks

This is a common dodge done to maximize funding points from the same patient.

It is completely wrong. There are no treatment limits on the NHS.

If you need 1 filling, or 32, they can all be done in the same treatment plan for just one NHS charge.

I would ask your denist to re-read the terms of his NHS contract. Or just complain about him to the local PCT.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
