I thought asking prices meant nothing (well I am sure every bear told us that last year).

Don't forget when they posted a rise, the words 'asking prices' weren't even mentioned, it was just 'House prices rise again' in 3 inch high lettering.

We had this conversation a couple of months ago FallenAngel (over the phone as you weren't a member of the forum then, obviously).
To be a pedant for a second: houses prices haven't changed in August, the asking prices have. The previous headline concerning house prices rises in the Express was, presumably, based on an index that actually looks at the sold prices.
Secondly, it's just one of those things that crap newspapers, especially the Mail and Express, will report gains but not report losses. I wouldn't necessarily put this down to some huge tactic to 'ramp' the propety market and fool the public, it's just to sell papers. In the same way you won't see a good NHS news story on the front page of these papers, or a story about immigrants doing some good for the country: it just won't happen as it doesn't sell papers. I've just done a google of 'rightmove' and '2.2' and it's reported on pretty much every financial website, along with broadsheets such as The Times and Telegraph. So it's reported in all the normal places.
And lastly, as I said last time, remember that if you asked average people whether houses prices have gone up or down this month compared to last, most won't have a clue. Which is healthy to hear: they are just bothered whether the general trend is up or down. It's only us geeks that care that much, and I imagine it's only us geeks that even know there are different indexes for these things.0 -
I just wanted to be the first to say...

I thought the Rigtmove index was useless and meant nothing?.....or have I missed something prevous months?0

FallenAngel9898 wrote: »I agree Cleaver with all you said, I just quoted this bit because it was when Rightmove posted a rise that they put up the usual headline. Still I guess I'm being a bit anal about it, and won't post in this thread again regarding the subject.
The reason I brough it up with you a second time is that you always debate it well, so don't take my 'we had this conversation before...' to mean that it isn't fun to have it again.0 -

you desperate boy - they were negative in June tooPrices have to fall back to sustainable traditional levels. Don't listern to the estate agents ramping spin.
50% drops by Christmas 2009 :rotfl:
that's over 3% per month :rotfl:
desperate much?I thought the Rigtmove index was useless and meant nothing?.....or have I missed something prevous months?
yep - those sitting on Hope Mountain waiting for prices to drop are now seeing the Rightmove index as the 2nd coming of the 4th son of Mr Broderick...0 -
I expect the Nationwide figures will be a creditable source again when it next shows a drop.0

Saving those pennies for the over-extended mortgage. Great MSE idea. :money:0
