Self Assessment bill/distraint notice

  • If the letters came from Newcastle, are you sure it was a tax liability they were after and not National Insurance contributions?

Honestly, I have no idea... I can't get anyone to tell me. I phoned them several times to request details of what the supposed debt was. They kept promising to fax or post the info, but all they sent were calculations from 2006 which were completely useless. I know the problem originated from my 2003/4 tax return, but that's the only info I've been able to get out of them so far.
Why on earth would anyone ignore letters from the tax man saying you owe them money, They are not someone who just goes away if they don't get a response.

With all due respect, I came here seeking information - not to be reprimanded for following some bad advice six years ago. This was my first and only experience of self assessment, and I assumed that my accountant at the time knew what he was doing when he advised me to ignore the letters. Clearly, that was a mistake.
Write to the complaints manager at your office. Send it recorded delivery, say you need a copy of the return and why.

As you have paid off the debt then there is no need to copy in the debt management section

Thank you, that is what I plan to do.
