Similar thing happened to me. I left uni and could not get any work experience or any job even related to my degree for 5 months after. After a while i admitted defeat and signed on and was just honest and said i was looking for work or a placement in my chosen field and didn't think it would be so difficult or take so long (sooooo naive!!!). They were fine with it really, just asked how i had been supporting myself etc.
I have ended up getting jobs not related to my degree since to support myself, mostly admin work, but as long as i keep my skills and portfolio up to date i know i can go into it when an opportunity arises.
Good luck with finding a good job. I hope you do!!
