tracing thro d v l a

Can anyone please tell me if debt collectors, baliffs and indeed the o r can trace peoples address from the dvla without a car registration number. I have just bought brov a car and i dont know whether to register it in my name at brothers new address or in his name. He's just scared stiff the baliffs/collectors will start knocking at his door again before he gets his bankcruptcy which he's planning to do at the end of this month.

  • Not sure about whether they can find addresses or not from the DVLA so can't help there unfortunately.

As for the car though, I think (and I stress that I'm not 100% on this) that if you bought the car for your brother and you register it under his name and address he will be the REGISTERED KEEPER of the car.

However, as YOU bought it you can remain as the OWNER of it. If you have receipts, sales documents etc then it can easily be proved that you actually own the car, even if your brother is the main user, and as such it cannot be claimed as an asset in his bankruptcy.

Hopefully someone will be along soon to confirm/deny this with more authority.
When you're going through hell, keep going! You will get to the other side eventually.

Falling down is NOT failure, failure is not getting up again!

quite right skint yokel, if Brovahelp can show that he bought the car and is letting his brother use it (rather than giving it to him) then he should be fine

Make sure you keep the receipts in your name to prove the car doesn't belong to the potential BR. Legal keeper isn't necessarily the owner of the car.

Thanks a lot for replies. I've got all receipts & bill of sale made out to me so i'm sure I can prove I own the car. I don't suppose anyone can answer my question about baliffs/collectors tracing addresses thro dvla.
