Dentistry Worries

OK, So today I bit the bullet, well more chewed at it, as biting is not a option.
I have a HUGE abscess, and went to he dentist to get it sorted, I havent been to the dentist in umm.. 10/11 years, and in that time, nearly all of my teeth have rotted away.
So dentist takes a look, says he'll refer me to the hospital to get put to sleep to get 20 removed  actually I was surprised he was leaving any in at all.
To the point. what happens when they put you to sleep, I've tried googling, but I cant find a NHS answer, which is what I'm looking for, as my treatment is NHS not private.
Any answers greatly recieved.

I'm not sure I understand the question but they use general anaesthetic to put you to sleep, this does have risks - if you google "risks of general anaesthetic" I'm sure you will get lots of info.
I'm no expert but I'm surprised they are not planning on doing this under local anaesthetic, my dad was in a similar situation and they were taken out under local anaesthetic in the dentist.

Cheers Feline.
I think I was asking what happens when they put you under, but I forgot to ask, if that makes sense ! lol
is it just your head that gets numbed,
how do you swallow if you tongue is numb
what if you need a wee when its getting done ?
how long do you stay in hospital after
Newbie worry questions really0 -
If you are being put to sleep - thats it - you are out stone cold.
You wont want a wee
you dont swallow
You know nothing and feel nothing at all.
You are unconscious for the whole procedure
A tube is put down your throat to keep you breathing ok
As for how long you are in it depends on your health service provider. You may go in as a day patient and be out in the afternoon or they may decide you need an overnight stay, esp if the extractions are difficult, need stitching or you bleed excessively0 -
Ah, I understand now!
You go to sleep completlly, not just your head or mouth. I don't think any specific part of you is numb, it's more like your asleep, so you would still be able to swallow I would imagine.
I think you are asked not to eat or drink for a certain amount of time before hand so you wont need the bathroom
I just remembered my bfs mum had a tooth out under general anesthetic and she went in the morning and came out in the afternoon but she did have to get me to collect her and confirm to the nurse that I would stay with her for the next 24 hours incase there was any problems. If no one had been able to get her and stay with her they would have kept her in overnight.

You won't want to wee as you will have been starved for 24h before the anaethetic. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Thankyou all for answering my wee question :rotfl:0
