My mortgage company trying to charge me £30 per day for missing a payment?

Can they do this? My girlfriend said there is a letter at home for me (I'm not in UK right now). Apparently I've missed one or more mortgage payments, and they are going to charge me £30 PER DAY until its rectified.
I'm not doubting I've a missed payment. I might have missed two. I've been bank transferring some money to my account by Paypal and I've withdrawn some in local currency here, but I can't check my balance or transactions so I don't know.
Right now I also don't have access to any of my original mortgage paperwork. What I need to know, is legally can they charge me £30 per day on a £550 debt? I realise if I've missed something then there is a fee to write and tell me, but £30 a day seems like robbery to me. It would very quickly get to the level I simply couldn't pay it at all.
thanks

*sigh* ignore this thread, sorry for wasting everyones time. I've had someone else with common sense read the letter (ie a male
) and it says those charges would only apply if you let them go down the route of repossessing. They will debit the money again, I've sent more funds to my bank acc to cover it, panic over!
