Food allowance and lunches at work?

Hi everyone,

We went BR on 2nd July and were allowed £400 for food for 2 adults and a 1 year old. I didn't claim anything for lunches at work, my husband was out of work at the time.

He has since found employment and I was wondering if we would be able to up our food allowance slightly in the new IPA. Also, does it seem reasonable to now put a figure in for lunches at work too and if so how much?

I'd welcome your ideas of what would seem reasonable.

Thanks,

Poodle

It's worth a try, but I think a lot of OR's argue that the amount but for housekeeping should also cover lunches at work.

Why don't your post your new SOA to take into account husband's employment and see what comments are?

He must have additional expenses like travel. Does he need to wear a suit to work - dry cleaning £10 etc.

£400 seems very reasonable even including lunches at work, i feed 3 of us (my son is a 6 foot teenager) on about £150 a month and we eat well.
it is of course up to you how you manage your budget but for me part of going through all the BR was getting very real about my spending.

perhaps checking out the money saving old style and looking at why you need more than that in your monthly food budget.

Does your husband have to buy lunch or could he take a packed lunch?

  • In my opinion it will do no harm to ask, I was allowed £600 for groceries and £100 for school dinners. Also your travel will go up and maybe he needs smart clothes for work so clothing allowance could go up. Every OR is different of course and it depends where you live...

How many people in your household? School dinners aren't the same as 'work' lunches.

  • Will his increased earnings not make you worse off by trying to claim for lunches?

Poodle put up his SoA with his new wage and let someone have a look at it for you.
£400 is the usual allowance for 2 adults so you might be able to increase that slightly anyway.
