How far do you walk to work?

Just wondering how far people walk to work and how this affects the time they have to leave for work so they arrive on time?

I live 1.5 miles away from work which is nothing! Only downside is I have to transport a lot too and from work; my laptop, daily marking and assessment folders and any resources I've made ... I usually aim to get to work anytime from 7 to 7.30 depending on how much catch up I have to play or things I have to set out.

So this summer holiday I've walked to and from where work is to time how long it takes and it means I'd have to set off about 6.30ish so get up at about 5.30 to have shower, sort out cats, walk dog etc ... my OH thinks I'm mental for considering it but it would save me about £25 petrol a week

May have to buy myself an old granny wheelybag lol

I live about 2 miles from work. I like to walk it (takes me 30 mins each way at a fairly brisk walk) but with the weather we've had, I've been back on my bike (10 mins in the rain beats 30 mins in the rain)

I have occasionally considered buying a trailer!

Oh... trouble is with the walking... it's a boring as hell walk along a dull, straight main road.

    Hiya
That's a massive saving if you think you can do it! Lakeland have some gorgeous, but not cheap, granny wheelybags.

I only have a 10 step walk to work as I work from my converted garage. No excuses for being late! Mind you, I always walk our dogs for at least an hour before I start work so I often start work a little bedraggled and wet if the weathers not been good.

Good luck with your walking xx
  • At the moment I don't walk to work - at 8 miles it is a little far :) But I do cycle sometimes and I love that.

We have actually sold our house (today, actually! hoorah! :T) with the plan to move somewhere within walking distance of work - to us that would be somewhere between a 30 minute or 1 hour walk away (so max distance will be ~3 miles). Just got to find somewhere now!

No chance of Mr LW walking to work I'm afraid - it's 32 miles away! He tried so hard to get work locally, but no dice; he was out of work for 11 months at one time, and so pleased to get the job he now has.

When I was last at work (10 years ago) I had about a 200 yard walk to get there.

If it is costing you that for a 1.5 mile trip (each way) for a week then you seriously need to get your car looked at.

I only pay £50 per week for a daily 78 mile round trip.

I have a brisk 8 minute walk to work. It's really nice as it means I can also nip home at lunchtime and get the washing in/out. I have waterproof trousers & coat for the days when the weather is not so good and a huge golf umbrella! My only pet peeve is dodging the dog p*o in the pavements. Grrr I h8 lazy dog owners.

Buy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning

I can't walk to my regular place of work as it's over 30 miles away, however once a week I work from one of our other offices and travel by train. I do drive to the station as it would take 40 mins to walk there & at 5:30am it's not something I'm particularly keen to do, but when I get off the train the other end it's a pleasant 20-25 mins brisk walk to/from the office. I'd certainly do it daily if I worked there (I did get a lift from a colleague the day it was totally pouring down but only 'cos he offered!) it would have to be pretty solid rain for me to consider not walking, though the thought of sitting all day, or the train journey home in sodden clothes isn't enormously thrilling ...

It's a 2ltr so a bit thirsty ... and a I sit in a queue at a main island for a while! Its more likely £20 and the £5 would cover weekend short journeys ... tend to use other cars at the weekend and they are not as guzzling with fuel!

Thanks for your replies people ... i think i'm going to time it on my bike later this week ... I've had my Ipod with audio books to keep me amused on the practice journeys ... a great way for me to proof read books for work!
