How to calculate possible mortgage

I realise this is a silly question but...
Assuming my credit rating is fine how can I roughly estimate what kind of motgage I could get?
Someone suggested that most conservative would be 'salary x 3.5'
Is that true?
I just want a rough idea whether it's even woth considering getting one or not.
