Gas & Electricity Post BR

Hi All,

I went bankrupt on the 21st May and since then have been trying to stick to my budget, it has been tricky at times but I am really proud of myself so far. Anyway, I have money saved to pay my electricity & gas bills. They came today as expected however I received four. . .

My last Gas & last Electricity bill & my first Gas & first Electricity bill.

I gave them a call as they don't make a lot of sense, the 'last' bills run for the nine days before BK, and the 'first' from the 22nd to present. The 'last' bills both show I owe money, and the 'first' show I am in credit!

I called BG and they said that due to my BR, my accounts were closed and new ones created (Same tarriff & billing). The money I paid on my last bills just before I went BK has been put onto my new accounts. I asked her to check, double check and check again and the lovely lady had confirmed that I am £80.08 in credit between the two accounts.

Does this sound normal? I hadn't expected anything much to happen with my BG as I didn't owe them anything and have never been in arrears with them. Although this appears to be great news I am a little worried that it is too good to be true.

Has anyone been in the same situation? In spite of her reassurances I don't want a huge bill to land on my doorstep unexpectedly. Am I silly worrying and should I put the money I have in my sealed pot and smile? ;)

Your advice will be much appreciated!

A huge bill cannot land on your doorstep - you are only liable for usage now after your BR date (as per the bill) not any usage before BR; they have nicely closed old accounts for you. Does this mean that if you are £80 in credit on the new account you are £80 in debt on the old account??

Just leave the money on account and pay as you would normally. I think you are in the clear so to speak, but it will help come winter time and is there just in case they do try to re-coup it; although not sure how they can as the old account is now closed.

I am £80.08 in credit on the new accounts. I hope they leave it as it is, the money saved will really help at Christmas.
  • I had the same, got serveral bills and worked out that they cleared the old account upto BR which I was not expecting. I simply paid the new account and they are fine.
