How many threads are they on selling Gold...Ive posted this on another two, as i think its important to be aware of the scam going on....

I tried an experiment today(yesterday)...I took five pieces of gold to town with me, to try and find out what i could get for it......

There was a thickish mans chain, a heavy initial ring, a damaged bracelet, a squashed ring and a charm...I had not weighed it, and had no idea of the scrap price...

I went into Albermarle and Bond and was offered £215....

I then went into Ramsdens and was offered £120....I looked at the assistant disgustingly....she asked me if that was acceptable...I told her I had been offered double that only 200 yards down the road......after talking to her colleague, she said..............."ok...we can match that".......WOW £120 increase .......what a rip off these places must be........

and a guy standing in another window next to me had just accepted their first offer of £150 for his......
    Couponing....."every little hurts"

But all the people can't be all right all the time. .........I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

  • hi all having just read this thread it occured to me that instead of selling your`re jewellery for scrap, would it not be better to recoup some of its intrinsic value (assuming you are not desperate for the cash)by advertising, say on ebay, local papers, etc ,there by sombody gets a nice piece of bling and you get extra cash for little or no effort

I think the guy standing next to me the other day, needed a "speed fix"....as many "gold sellers" possibly do.....Mine was just "testing the water"

    Hi

I just put the 16 grams 9 carat gold into one of the websites that buy gold ( some of them have calculators) and it says £104. I am thinking of selling my necklace as I need the money. I have been looking at them to see if they are legitimate.

From what ive learnt today, scrap 9ct gold fetches around £6.60 per gram.........so that sounds reasonable as a scrap price, it will be more valuable if it could be sold as jewellery(not scrap)

That's the website i've been basing my prices on as well and i still can't decide what to do!
I got a quote from a local jewellers and it was approx £100 less than what 'hattongardensmetals' quoted with the calculator but then i worry that if i send it off to say 'Hattongardenmetals' and then they offer less then what the calculator advises, because you have to pay for your own posting and if you want any of it returning you have to pay for that as well. I'm confused as to what to do. My head is telling me local jewellers(cash in hand, won't get lost etc) but my heart and greed is telling me websites(more money, potentially).

I havent decided what to do either, but its imperative to find out the EXACT weight that you are sending away, and to know the quality of it(carat)....I havent read their Tand Cs, yet, but surely we must be protected from any frauds by them...

Theres a chance your local jeweller may up his price if you tell him youve been offered more...Ramsdens offered me double their original offer after i told them i had been offered more...but it was still £150 less than online...

  • Basic crude valuation would be £198 upwards from a dealer. ( about £6 per gram)

With regards to the websites, I would just google one for feedback and customer reviews. I think some people discuss specific sites on here, if you search.

I would be wary of using some of the sites until you can get feedback.

    Sorry for the vague answer.

Dont be afraid to haggle I think is a good point Leadhead makes !
