Why You Can't Trust Those Jobs Figures

http://www.forbes.com/2009/08/08/jobs-unemployment-layoffs-business-washington-figures.html

the Labor Department in 1994 stopped including unemployed workers who had stopped looking for a job for more than year

I belive it's people claiming JSA, the "claimant count" thats normally used when talking about "unemployment". Although there are other measurse that include, eg, stay at home parents & the independantly wealthy.

The government don't include those folks who are on JSA but on a New Deal course (or whatever they call it these days), the JSA then becomes a training allowance (funny its the same amount of money as JSA).

The training allowance is actually it's not the same amount, it's topped up to about £15 more per week. It lasts for a total of 13 weeks and the claimant needs to keep a timesheet but yeah it's the same amount in the rest of the New Deal phases.
