Help me save my shoes please

My work shoes are about to break and I really can't afford another pair at the mo, so need to fix them before they go.
They are court style with a little buckle at the end of a piece of elastic (on the out side of shoe) with a strap that goes accross the foot/ankle into it, if that makes sense, you know the type I'm sure.
Anyway the elastic bit that goes to the buckle is all but worn away, the rest of the shoe is in great condition. They are leather so can only attach something new onto the bit of elastic where it joins my shoe, its vanishing at the buckle end if that makes sense.
Have tried to get a new bit of elastic onto the buckle but cant for the life of me work out how it could be done. Anyone know how to do it?
Or is there anything else I could use instead of elastic?
Any ideas anyone?

If you take them to a shoe repairers they would be able to repair your shoe they shouldn't charge you much.

tried 2 one said couldn't do it and the other wanted £15 to stitch a new bit onto the leather, which for an inch of elastic seems a lot!0

could you loop the elastic around the buckle and sew both ends to the shoe in the same place (thus ending up with a doubled piece of elastic)? You might need a thimble or thimble substitute to push the needle through, and you could make the thread stronger and more slippy by pulling it over a candle before using it.0
