DELL Inspiron 6400 Dual Core £629

Hi,

This seems a good price for a dual core laptop.

Any suggestions/advice.

I did wonder about the screen upgrade to the 15.4" W Screen XGA TFT Display resolution: 1280x800 with TrueLife™ for an extra £47. What do you think

I've been looking at this laptop myself, I've pondered for days on which spec would be best for me. I sometimes play multiplayer games so the dedicated graphics card option would probably suit me.

I've searched various sites looking for that 'unmissable' deal but this Dell offer seems to be the best around for a dual core system.

I rang Dell sales a few days ago and explained that I didn't require the free printer, I was offered a reduction in price of around £15.

I'm still pondering spending so much money.

So... could I play the latest games on this? I really want a laptop rather than a desktop - as it save loads of space. But I would like to play the odd game on it!

If you choose the 256MB ATI® MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 option then you should be able to play 'most' of the new games. However if it's a true gaming machine then you may want to consider this machine

Sounds like a good deal to me. Just one comment though - I bought a Dell laptop on a buy now pay later basis then later realised I was being stiffed an extra £50 for the privilege. I think Dell are dishonest in not being upfront about the charge.

Anyone else with a similar experience or was it just me?

The Dell TrueLife screens are similar to the Sony X-black, Acer CrystalBrite, etc. Some love them, some hate them. They have a high-gloss finish to them, as if they have a glass front. It's meant to provide more of a crisp and colour vibrant image. Supposedly it's also anti-reflective, but you find that room lights and sun reflections can be easily seen in the screen and are distracting to some. Best to go to the high-street and see if you like such screens or not.

Also be aware that Dell laptop LCD screens are prone to backlight leakage. Basically the level of brightness across the whole screen is not uniform and the bottom tend to be brighter. This is only really noticable when there is a dark background, like watching a DVD or a dark game. Normal desktop usage it's not noticeable.
