A couple of recommendations. If you prefer a more modern style dry Riesling go for M&S Mineralstein or Darting Estate Rieslings - normally cost about £7 per bottle. For a medium wine try Dr L Riesling which you can get in Sainsburys. The 'Dr L' also does wines for M&S and in supermarkets around the £10-12 mark which are very nice too. If you want something a little cheaper the brand 'Kendermans' is fairly good. Their organic wine is pleasant enough as is their Dry Riseling.
  • Avoid Hock at all costs and really supermarket German wines tend to be rather shoddy.

I drink Loosen Weine from Laithwaites Wine or Leitz, which is more expensive but AMAZING!

I've also had a few bottles of this in the past - http://www.laithwaites.co.uk/article~id~27364~brand~LAIT~cid~AFFILIATE|TD|KR96~mscssid~7539644E73E442DCBFD57FF5D4A9F448.aspx

    Really yummy, classic Riesling.

Quality and price ladder for German wines
    ---

    1) Table Wines - clochard stuff

    2) Landwein - under which Hock, Liebfraumilch and other concoctions

    3) Qualitätswein bestimmber Anbaugebiete (QbA) - regional quality wines

    4) Prädikatswein, QbA with predicate, in ascending order:

    - Kabinett
    - Spätlese
    - Auslese
    - Beerenauslese
    - Eiswein
    - Trockenbeerenauslese

I agree with the above - and you will find reasonably priced versions of these in the supermarkets. However, I wouldn't touch Black Tower or Blue Nun, not much taste to them, just sweet vinegar really (just a personal opinion, sorry if anyone disagrees).

I quite like Bereich Nierstein, and that's fairly cheap and a nice wine too.

Alternatively if you don't want to spend too much, check out Lidl and Aldi - I've had this from Aldi before and I quite enjoyed it...

  • I bought Black Tower for my childrens teachers presents (with a little extra pressie!).

I bought it because, (I'm not a big wine drinker) I personally think it's easy to drink if you're not really into wine, so it's easy (ish) to drink! IYKWIM?!

My friend now drinks it and she's quite fussy.

Obviously, it's a personal thing but IMO, it's perfect for a pressie if you're not sure what the person in question would like.

As the label states, this is a Prädikatswein (Nierstein Region "Gutes Domtal" vineyards, Late Harvest) on level 4, so quite high on the ladder. Not quite a Grand Cru yet, but excellent value for money, on the semi-sweetish side.

Blue Nun, Black Tower, Hock etc. are just evil concoctions, surplus production unfit for quality wine status, so they're all poured together into big metal tanks, bottled and flogged off to Britain under the aforementioned labels for the UK market only. Sorry, folks, but that's the way it is. You don't get "Hock" or "Black Tower" anywhere in Germany.

To be on the safe side: if it doesn't say QbA or, even better, QmP on the label, stay clear.
And if it says "Erben" on it, avoid like pestilence.
