Utility Companies

Again I am sorry if this question has already been answered.

I'm helping my friend prepare for B/R - and she asked me this question -

Assuming there are no arrears with any utility companies (electricity, gas, water) - in other words they are all up to date.

Does the OR inform them of a Bankruptcy?

Many Thanks.

I didn't think the OR does contact the utility people.

But she saw it mentioned that the OR did contact the utility companies (even if all the bills were up to date) on another "Bankruptcy advice" site.

I have asked her - to just ask me all her questions.

So I can ask on this forum.

    Thanks again

Couple of years ago when I decided on BR i'd been up to date & owing no debt to scottish power....didn't tell them of my bankruptcy & neither did the OR...passed a credit check with british gas & scottish power (changed providers halfway through!) as well when we moved to our new place back in Aug last year

I did read somewhere once that the OR did sometimes contact utility companies...BUT this usually was only if you added them as a creditor & you had debt with them

    Glad you had no problems.

I think it's safe to say - that providing there are no debts with the utility companies then the OR won't contact them.

After all - there really is no need to.

at the end of the day it all depends on the OR....afterall if its a company you owe nothing to the receiver wont usually be interested

  • Hi,
We went bankrupt in March this year - we didnt have anything outstanding on utilities but cancelled direct debits with changing bank accounts and didnt restart them straight away. With our gas - we had been given a new account number - when I queried it they told me they had written off the amount outstanding on the day we went bankrupt and started us with a new account from that day - restarted on direct debit no problems. Electric bill despite being with the same company, didnt write off anything but have allowed me to restart direct debit payments with no problem. We didnt tell them - so either OR did or they check London paper - either way it had no detrimental effect on us:rotfl:
