HELP! mouse isn't working.

Options
I gave my old computer to a friend, I set it up fine until we tried to use the mouse, and it wasn't recognized, it was a different mouse to the one that came with the pc. How can I use the keyboard instead of the mouse? so that I can install the mouse, and how would I install it. I need simple advice please. Hope someone can help me. Thanks!

Thanks localshop, the mouse came from my new dell pc, and it worked on that, the pc i gave to my friend was quite old with windows 98. Now after your advice, I cannot figure why it doesn't work when I plugged it in.

Press one of the windows keys, right of ctrl key on left hand side and 2 left of ctrl key on right hand side of keyboard. Then use up/down arrows to scroll through menues!!
    Plus check mouse battery.

    Thanks Sicker and adamuk,
Tomorrow when i see my friend i will check the mouse battery,( i didn't know it had one) also will try the windows key for scrolling.
The mouse is usb but the computer tower has a small extension thingy that the mouse fits.

Sometimes if your mouse doesn't work try cleaning the wheel because they can get clogged up with muck.

it is most probbable that the mouse is an optical one. If it came with a new PC.
And if it isnt wireless, than i does not have a battery.
