Tax rebate

Options
I moved abroad this time last year and sent off my P85 to claim back any excess tax I had paid. As I am renting out my house and I stated this on the form, the tax office sent me a NRL 1 form to fill in. When I phoned up the tax office to question this, I was told I did not need to fill this is as the house was being rented by immediate family, however, as they had sent it to me, to fill it in and send it back. As I had to fill this in, the lady I spoke to on the phone said I also needed to fill in a tax return.
The house is being rented out for next to nothing and it is not enough for me to be paying tax on the money earned.

I sent this form off in May- should it be taking this long- I have heard nothing back from the tax office. I can't keep phoning up as my phone bill from abroad will be costing me an absolute fortune.

As you are in receipt of property income you need to complete a Tax Return, including property income. As you have gone overseas have a look at booklet "HMRC6"; it has lots of info on leaving the UK.

The NRL1 means that you can receive your rents gross, rather than net of basic rate tax. They can take a while to be processed, like everything at HMRC.
