Sent DH to pick up some bits Wednesday as not well and he came back with 2 bags for £2 of Asda's braeburn apples and they have no taste at all, he refuses to eat them, I tried one and he's right just watery and tasteless yuk! I don't want to throw them out, though as that would be wasteful, can't take them back as I emptied them into the fruit bowl and chucked out the bags they came in and the bin men have now been.
Had thought of using them to make a crumble with cinnamon & raisins but if they have no taste will the crumble just taste like cinnamon? Anybody got any tips for bringing flavour out of the apples or suggestions for something to use them up? I'm finding a lot of Asda's fruit and veg is lacking taste these days, is it the time of year as far as the braeburns go and how do I find out which apples are in season or taste best each month IYKWIM?

Personally if they don't taste of anything I'd chuck them away. You could try a crumble with some other fruit added like plums or blackberries though which will add some flavour.
good news -the British apple season is about to kick off. You ought to be able to find Discoveries and Worcesters in the shops very soon and they will be bursting with flavour. Farmshops are your best bet0 -
Thanks Thriftlady
That's just what I wanted to hear (not the chucking out part though lol) just looked at my freezer list and I have some frozen blackberries and cherries in so will use the apples to make a cherry & apple and a blackberry & apple crumble to have as puds this weekend
We haven't got a local farm shop. Will try and find one that's not too far to travel to, would be useful for more things than apples, I watched a River Cottage Autumn prog on catch up TV yesterday and fancy making the beetroot brownies that Hugh made, so need a supply of fresh beetroot to try those. I'm sure I've seen a recipe for beetroot chocolate cake somewhere as well, will have to get my thinking cap on. I'm loathe to try veg box schemes as I'm worried that I'll be given veg we won't eat and it will be wasted. I tried them a few years ago and the boxes that turned up weren't as advertised and they put things in that we don't like/eat, so a farm shop would be worth it if we can find one, thanks for the tips

What about an apple sauce cake or apple muffins? That way if there isn't too much flavour you will still have a moist sponge and the goodness out of the apples.

Thanks Ali
Another good suggestion you just reminded me that I had a recipe given to me for an apple sponge with rosemary added to it, which is a bit like the apple sponge cake so that's another possibility. Will ask DH which he fancies for pud later all are easy to whip up as I already have crumble mix in the freezer. Muffins would have been a good idea, but just made a dozen strawberry muffins which will last us for a good few days, so a pud using the apples is on the cards me thinks and the apple sponge is getting my vote so far

Ooh, the apple sponge with rosemary sounds good. I have a large rosemary bush, so I'd love to know the recipe. Pretty please?:oIf your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0

I used to use a lot of plain applesauce to reduce the fat in baking (you substitute it for part of the oil or butter), but of course it made everything taste like apples. Perhaps some tasteless apples, cooked down without any seasonings, would be ideal for making lower-fat cakes or cookies that you don't really want the apple taste in?0

I have a tree FULL of tasteless cookers... (actually, I haven't used them for so long I'd better check that they're tasteless rather than disgusting!), so would be interested in any ideas!
Usually they either go to a friend with horses, or into the compost bin... it seems a terrible waste...0 -
Hi, , gently cook the apples using brown sugar, and a knob of butter/marg. This gives a lovely toffy apple filling for pancakes, crumble or spooned over plain sponge.0
