Hi,
I am self employed and thinking of starting a family. just wanted to find out some facts, i have looked up that i can get maternity allowance while i am pregnant, but just wanted to find out what benefits i can get once the baby is here?
child allowance etc? would be great for some help because i dont know where to start!

It depends on your income really. But whilst you are pregnant you may qualify for a sure start maternity grant of £500, all expectant mothers get a health in pregnancy grant of £190, then once you have had baby you will get child benefit which is £20 a week and you may qualify for child tax credits and working tax credits.

The child benefit forms are in your bounty pack - so make sure you get one when in hospital (well they were) thats an automatic entitlement, you just need to register birth then send off the cert with form
As Shell said the other benefits are means tested, child tax credit - working familys tax. All depends if you are going back to work or not. If not you may be entitled to some income support after your maternity money runs out.
