Got a baking itch...what basics do i need?

ok i've got an itch to bake, i used to bake every weekend with my gran when i was little, but just made some cakes "instant cake mix style" and am itching for more.

But i either need to wait till next friday till i get paid to buy some baking goodies, or convince my mum to buy some bits and pieces with her shopping over the weekend.

But before i get too over excited, what do you think i should get.
I mean i know i'll need flour, eggs, sugar, butter etc
Anything else you think are a must have for baking?

I'm hoping if i get quite good at it, i can end up saving my mum money, and get my little brother to take cakes to school with him. And also save me money by taking some to uni each day too.

depends on what type of cakes/cookies scones etc you prefer really :)
spices and dried fruit essential here.
Jam, honey, golden syrup or treacle?
chocolate - don't need chips, just bash with rolling pin!
    cocoa
    baking powder/bicarbonate of soda
cornflour or white vinegar for meringues

    anyway, good luck littlepinkstars :)

How about a trip to the library and get some books? Mary Berry's and Delia's cake books are both good.
Do you need tins or do you have those?
A roll of baking paper to line tins
    Cutters/palate knife/mixing bowl
Really I'd stick to the basics as you say flour, egg, butter, dried fruit etc till you decide where you are going. Scones are a great standby and you can make them sweet or savoury.
    Best wishes..

I love google for ideas. First type in the first food that comes to mind, then flick over to the images ... and surf by photo. I can spend hours there looking through things. When you spot something you like, just google for different recipes and pick the one that fits what you've got/what you like.

e.g. somebody on another thread today mentioned chocolate fridge cake ... and I was off... here it is: http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=chocolate%20fridge%20cake&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi
