I have just been told by my mate who works in Halfords that you can have your oil level checked for free. to make sure you have enough oil so as not to break the engine.

But what ever you don't buy any oil from halfords. It will cost almost twice as much as a motor factors, i.e euro car parts, unipart ect. The same applies for almost all car parts. I went to buy a new car battery, i thought i would find out how much it was at halfords....£90!! at a motor factors it was onl £30. I call it the 'Halfords tax' taking advantage of people that feel that halfords is the only option.0

If you need halfords to check your own engine oil, you shouldn't really be driving0

Quite.
Lift bonnet.
Locate dip-stick (in the engine bay, not your other half).
Remove dip-stick.
Clean it off.
Reinsert dip-stick.
Pull it out again.
Check where it falls and fill/leave as necessary.
Do with cold engine.
