Student Loans Problem

Does anybody know if a late payment to Student Loans goes against your credit rating?

I won't bore you all with the gory details, but basically, I rang them to change my D/D details, they did not take a payment ( their fault, they admitted they gave me incorrect info) they then sent me nasty letters saying that I was in arrears.

I have since paid this payment on a debit card, but I am really angry that they made the mistake but treat me like I did not want to pay, although my money was sat there waiting!

I am actually very tempted to write and complain about the treatment, as I have never missed a payment before.

What do you think?

I don't know for sure but DH's student loan was handed to a debt collection agency 2 years ago because he forgot to post off the form saying he wasn't earning enough to pay it back and he's been given 3 credit cards since then so it can't do to much damage :)

  • I dont think it would, not unles you missed a payment and didn;t get in touch to sort it out. It'd be a poor do if did, but to put your mind at rest why not call them x

I have called then a few times, only to be told different things by different people.

One adviser I spoke to told me they do not pass any details on to credit companies and another told me only when it becomes a " recovery problem" do they start action. After being incorrect advice ( twice!) when just trying to change my details, Im afraid I dont trust them now!

Il just keep my eye on my credit report, I think, incase anything gets put on, and may write a complaint letter in the meantime about bad customer service.

Definitely write that letter, they should be held to account for treating you badly!!

You deserve good service automatically, irrespective of what happens to your credit report!

Strongly worded but polite, thats the way - good luck :D

  • I have suffered at the hands of these incompetant people. Your situation is fairly normal and probably borders on the illegal. They make a mess of it and then charge you a fine. I am currently attempting to get to the bottom of this, primarily the issue of charging people when the error is theirs. No ordinary loan company would be able to behave in this manner without being brought to book. I have a thread on this board, Student Loan Charges, feel free to have a look!

Ask them to take reasonable steps to repair your credit rating too
