I need to gain weight

I've always been thin and have a high metabolism. Doctors in the past have weighed me, told me that technically I am under weight but as long as I'm eating properly (which I am) then I'm fine.

Problem is now, I'm trying for a baby and tests are showing that I am not ovulating which could be down to the fact that my cycles are irregular so the ovulation tests don't work and of course that I'm not ovulating.

Doctor thinks that I need to gain at least half a stone in order to boost my chances of ovulating etc (and also if I did get pregnant I need to make sure I'm healthy and at good weight).

I'm due to see a dietician in about a month or so, but until then I'd really like to be able to get myself on a good track. I do eat normally but I think I eat too slowly and need to increase my portion size.

Is there anything else I can take to boost my intake? My mum suggested that perhaps I could have those Complan milkshakes to give me an extra boost every day?

Has anyone else been in this same position??

When I was looking to build weight a little at uni I used to use (ironically) slimfast - they're designed to be a meal in a shake, so if you have one with a meal, that's two meals for the price of one. Looking side-by-side, certainly when I used them (6 or 7 years ago) they were higher in protein and vitamins, but lower in fat than the "WEIGHTGAIN 7000" stuff they sell, more expensively, in tesco just next to slimfast.

I didn't think of Slimfast, but that does sound like a good idea to give me a boost.

Its likely the dietician will ask you to complete a food diary: might be an idea to start now? That way you can see where you are able to easily up calorie intake. :)

I had your problem, but after I'd had my first child. My GP put me onto a 2500 calorie a day diet.....it is quite difficult but whatever you do, don't substitute fatty or sugary foods just because they have a higher calorie count, as that won't be healthy either!

Why not start to have mid-meal snacks - things like a couple of slices of Soreen malt loaf with a scrape of butter or a milkshake or smoothie (made with fruit & yogurt)?

Or look at dried fruit & nuts - but beware the fat / sugar content that goes with the calories.

I'd get your GP to refer you to a gynae to acurately determine why you are not ovulating. There could be other reasons besides your weight.

I can't see that 7lbs would make much difference either way. If you were 2 - 3 stones underweight, it would be a different matter.

If you want to gain weight, eat carbs.

Ask for referral, as moneypooh says.

Also check out the 'Nutrition' canned drinks. Each one is 400 calories, and is extremely balanced. It'd be a good way of gaining 1-2lbs a month. :)
