I need to rant about Ikea

I need to do this so much, they have made me so cross.

I was in the Belfast store this morning getting some very reduced spare covers for my sofa. I had been asked by my sister to get one for her if they had any left - they're discontinuing the range. I could only get enough for me and felt bad about not getting one for my sister so I thought about it and rang their customer services department to ask if I could buy the display item. The lady rang the store and spoke to the staff and told me yes, I could go to the store to get it and it would be kept for me. I was given the person's name to speak to. I was very clear that I was ringing because it was too far to go on spec so I wanted to know before I went.

Roll on a few hours - I leave work early, drive to Ikea and am told that the customer services lady was wrong and had misadvised me. The manager refuses to let me buy the display item because there is more stock in an "inaccessible" warehouse that won't be in store until tomorrow. I tell her I had specifically rang and spent nearly a quarter of an hour on their 0845 number on my mobile phone to ascertain that it was possible for me to buy the display item before I went there and she tells me very aggressively "it's not my fault, I didn't tell you that. Take it up with customer services! You'd think she worked for a different company to hear her.

Customer services tell me there is nothing they can do - who was the caller I spoke to - I honestly didn't remember the name though gave them the exact time and duration of call. Told them it was a lady with heavily accented English. Surprise surprise call centre is not local so they can't find out who it was.

I told them I didn't see that it was fair to expect me to make another journey the following day when it was their mistake. They say I can't have the display item because someone might be in store later tonight wanting to buy the item. I say, so, you don't have it here for them to buy. When the stock comes over in the morning put one of them on the sofa so that I can get what I was promised.

They refused, point blank to let me have the display item. Said the manager of the department had said no so it couldn't be done.

Hence my frustration and anger.

Thank you for reading my rant, rant over. :o

I'll write to the customer service manager's manager and copy in the store manager now. :D

any other helpful suggestions? Apart from don't go there again!

Just go back in tomorrow & buy one & then smile as you tell the manager that she can stick her display item.............. ;)
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!

But that's the point and exactly teh solution they suggested! i drove 40 miles today and would have to do the same tomorrow. Why should I pay to go twice because they can't get their stories straight?

And it took 2 1/2 hours out of my afternoon today - for nmothing because of their incompetence.

Sorry, maybe the rant isn't quite over yet. lol

The call centre person was in the wrong by the sound of it as she seems to have promised something that was not possible. Have you tried ringing that number back and asking for a Team Leader or supervisor? They should have a recording of the call and should be able to pinpoint it. Whine as much as possible, you might get some vouchers or something to compensate you for your petrol costs if nothing else.
  • Sorry... but tell your sister to go get the thing herself..... You've already got yours so stop worrying (I know it's a nice thing to do but you're really getting yourself worked up over something that isn't even for yourself)..... Ikea are grade A !!!!heads as far as any experiences I've had with their stores. I hate the way their stores are laid out.... I've only been 3 times to 1 in London and one in Bristol and can't say I really see what all the fuss was about them coming to Belfast... I won't be rushing there...
