I am impressed, wished someone thought me about money when I was that age. It is good to teach kids that money does not comes easy, they will appreciate that lesson when they grow up.

A lot of kids now days, do not know how hard is to put food on the table, and they do not stop asking for their favourite games etc.

Any parents that teach their kids responsibility must be proud. Impressive kid and I am even impressed with the way the post was written it is not a text language! like most adults use nowadays.

My friend is a teacher in a secondary school and says you wouldnt believe the amount of children that dont actually want to work to earn some money, she thought it was great that he does and I want to encourage him to do something on a small scale.

What would you pay for someone to take your bottles away, especially if you dont have a car or it builds up quickly in your house?
Nothing...if the council won't take it I'll chuck it in the bin. If you want to take it for free then I'll let you keep the value of the aluminium cans that you can then sell for scrap. You'll get about 1p per can but you'll need 65,000 cans (1 tonne) for a free pickup from the scrap merchant. Aluminium price is about £1,300 per tonne and the scrappy will pay you half.

I was talking about plastic bottles, not cans.

The value of that just isn't worth doing on any less than a bulk scale. You'll be lucky to acheive £150 per tonne for baled plastic bottles.

Check your local authority bye-laws. But usually minimum age for "light work" is 13.

Tiff has a point, many kids don't want to work, our local shop are always looking for paper boys/girls.

Lots of parents don't even give kids pocket money, just buy them things when they ask. And then wonder why the lack of work ethic in some of the younger generation.

Just read that back and I sound about ninety... :o

  • Dont know if anyone's mentioned it, but youngpoll.com have surveys for kids to complete for cash, once you reach £10 you can cash it through paypal - maybe your mum could help you with this part?
    Good luck : )

I'm talking about providing a service. Collecting recycling from people and taking it to the recycling bank. Our council doesnt take plastic, you have to take it to a supermarket or the tip and for those that dont drive or families that use a lot of bottles it can be inconvenient. It might not be viable, but if you read up above someone mentioned it was something they would pay for.

I must be ninety then too Kate lol. My son is 13 in November, so not too long to wait.

The reason he wants a job is that I wont just give him money or buy him everything he wants and as he gets older the list of things he wants gets longer and more expensive! He does do things around the house for money but he would really like to go out and do a job if possible. I'll ask in the paper shop again, my son did ask but the man in the shop isnt English and didnt understand him lol

Just had this same conversation with my daughter who is 11 and is keen to earn extra money.

The idea she came up with today was washing wheelie bins. She has made a few leaflets and knocked on a few doors and is offering to collect, clean and return neighbours wheelie bins for £1.50 each 2 for £2 and an extra £1 to do the 3 recylcling boxes the council give us.

This way she can get £3 per house and do it every fortnight.

There are 150 houses she can get to in under 2 mins, she reckons on 10 houses which is £15 a week and should keep her in Latte's on saturdays with her friends in town.
Poundland sell the big stick on numbers for wheelie bins, maybe your daughter could offer to supply these for £1.50 a number.
