Lead weights for curtains - how to use?

I made some curtains at the weekend that
a. weren't long enough
b. didn't hang right

I've let the hem down ready for turning up again at the right height, and bought some lead weight which is like a heavy piece of string. Do I need to just catch it at either end of the curtain hem, or does it need sewing along the length in a few places?
Sorry if this sounds a stupid question, but I want them to look nice.

When I used the sausage shaped curtain weights I just did as you said - ran it along the hem & caught it at either end.

Looked nice & never had any problems! But don't forget to take it out before you wash them! LOL!
