Tesco Online......

Morning all
((If I've posted this in the wrong place, please feel free to let me know / move it.))
Feeling very smug having been for a long walk with the dog this morning!
Anyway, back to the post... I'm without a car now, and thinking of trying Tesco online to get my main shop delivered. (Our Somerfields is tiny and VERY expensive.) I was wondering if anyone had any advice or sneaky tips for me as I've never ordered food online before. Is it wise to get veg from there for example?
Any tips gratefully received!

i must admit that i still prefer to buy my own veg and meat even when i online shop as its obviously nicer to pick the nicest looking/longest date etc.
however i have ordered both meat and veg and have had no complaints with either......but others have reported not being happy and having short dates, looking a bit manky etc.
online shopping tends to be better as you dont tend to impulse buy as you would going to the store itself.
one thing is to check out the vouchers board on here!! fabulous and will always cover the cost of delivery plus a bit more.....never shop without checking there first!!!!0 -
I have been shopping online with tesco for yrs now and always very happy with the food & service etc
<touch wood> ive never had any problems
but its like anything i guess, depends on the individual store etc as to what your experience will be like
you hear of peoples orders not turning up or the fruit / veg being off etc
some of the substitutions are a bit weird lol but you can put a note when you order about what you would like ,if anything as a substitution or if you would like eg green bananas etc
i always use a code from here : http://tescovouchercodes.blogspot.com/ to get money off or extra 1000 clubcard points etc0 -

I think you would have to be very lucky to get a picker who carefully went through the stock and chose the best produce for you. As far as I can see, they race around the store with a list and a trolley to get the order filled as quickly as possible. They probably get a ticking off if the boss thinks they're taking too long
I think is true of all online shopping, not just Tesco. Ideally you want a fussy picker like your mum
But you'll probably get some stressed out spotty yoof, instead
Can't you at least do your fruit & veg "on foot"?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

Hi there,
I used to be a home shopping picker at Tesco. I agree with the above, it depends entirely on the store and unfortunately you cannot pick which store delivers to you!
My store was months away from closing down so I was in the unfortunate situation of generaly having rubbish food to pick for my customers (and don't forget different sections are under different managers, what does the fruit and veg manager care if a home shopping customer goes without? They're not real customers anyway, are they?), and I had to do the best I could with substitutes and dates.
This usualy was OK but occasionaly customers would be unhappy (and often the customers who had least reason to would complain most, some people just feel the need to) - but there was always good contact with regular customers, so if you're nice to them and they know that you always order a certain item, they may well ring you up in the morning to ask if there is something else you would prefer. You can leave a message for each item, my advise is to always specify a substitute (or "none-at-all" if out of stock) on items that are important to you - the picker can't possibly know unless you tell them.
Strangely I'm also considering using Tesco home shopping now (it's been 5 years since I worked there, and that was a different store). But like others said before, I might use it for my heavy stuff like washing powder etc., and look for my fruit and veg elsewhere - and that way you get to see what's been reduced (I got a whole chicken yesterday for 99p!!!).
Good luck!0 -
I think online shopping is really hit and miss. I have tried it several times and never really been all that pleased with the "fresh" food. It's fine for bulky stuff and dry goods but I wouldn't rely on it for salads and veg/fruit, or for fresh meat. But there again I just LOVE the supermarket and like nothing more than a stroll round chucking stuff in my trolley so I may not be the best person to advise. I posted on here a couple of days ago about this very thing!!Jane

thanks all for your advice
I'd love to be able to get all my shopping in the little somerfield cos I can walk there, but it's just so expensive! Worst is their fruit and veg and it doesn't seem to be all that good... oh well, we'll try it if the OH gets paid on Monday (he started a new job a week last Tuesday), see what happens. I'll let you know how I get on

Poppycracker - I meant to say - on the Tesco order form there is a bit where you can put a note next to each item if you want. Make sure you put something like longest possible date please, or nice and firm, or somesuch description next to all your fresh stuff because then if it isn't to your liking you can ring up and complain that your instructions have not been complied with and they will give you a credit.Jane

I have been using online service about three times a month for the last year and think it is the best invention ever, esp as i have two small children! I have never had less than fresh fruit and veg, or fridge stuff and I am that nightmare customer who reaches right to the back of the fridge for my shopping.
Occasionally they might not have something in stock but no more often than going in myself. Probably has only happened three times in total.
And the best bit is that occasionally you get extra bits, our best yet was about a month ago, we got two litres of Gin and 100 ciggies:j, as they were tesco bottles of gin rather than a brand name i could return them, £19.60(don't like gin) and DH smoked the ciggies, but they saved him buying baccy that week.
I bought a slow cooker using the money and it only cost me about £3 in the argos sale instead of nearly £35:j :money:
Try it and see what you think, remember you can check when driver is there and not accept it if you are not happy!Trying to tidy and clean while the kids are still growing, is like trying to clear snow even though it's still snowing
£2 coin savings= £60 -
I use online shopping regularlly and think its a godsend but I do buy fruit and veg reg from farm shop/market during the week so dont need to worry about having long dates on my stuff from tesco.
However I do get a lot of shortdates on other fresh stuff - ie coleslaw out of date on the day of delv so basically to cut a long story much shorter! I use online shopping for bottles/tins tea bags etc and everything else do at local shops - still saves me money though.
Good luck - the first couple of online shops will take some time but after that its a whizz.0 -
thanks for that recovering spendaholic... that's the sort of tip I was looking for
