You can claim all genuine wholly business expenses, so as previous poster says overalls OK, but not Jeans from John lewis's. I would allow a couple of pairs of Tesco jeans for example but you have to be honest. You can also claim a figure for " Use of home as office" Fair figure may be £5 /week. The firm of accountants I work for would only charge £150 approx for doing a sub contractor. I would always recomend using an accountant as I've seen horrific sets of accounts prepared by people. The accountant will also complete any grant forms, or tax credit forms which are important to get right

If he is connected with the building Industry he should be CIS registered.

:confused:keigcf, the OP says he is now studying? I think he/she would be better off talking to an accountant even if he is no longer self employed than trying to go it alone on this one..
Might be wrong but it's what I would do

I am an accountant so not entirely unbiased (!) but I would recommend using a local firm of Chartered Accountants close to you preferably recommended by someone you know.

If you have all the paperwork then it sounds very straight forward and as someone has already said you should be able to easily get it done at less than £250 (and don't forget that fee is also allowable for tax).

www.icaew.com and use the find an accountant function
  • It may be cheaper to do it yourself, but how do you know for certain that you've done it right? I agree it's always best to get some one who knows all the tax laws, rather than trying to do it yourself. If you submit a tax return for items you can not claim, you will be in trouble with the tax man should they look in to it!
