Hi all
I feel like I would like to do something useful, worthwhile and different with my life for a little while.

So Voluntary Work probably abroad would fit the bill..but when I have googled, there seems to be so much of it I dont really know where to start.

So I thought I would ask if anyone has done this and how they found it and what they would recommend. I think I would like to work helping children(not sureI want to teach though) or community projects. I have IT skills, Electrical and good DIY skills as well as an interest in sports. The only other thing is that I am not really good in really hot temperatures so would like to avoid this.

Any suggestions of worthwhile projects etc ?

    Hello ahll

I'll move your thread to the 'Employment, Jobseeking & Training' board.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

    Regards

As you note, I am certain there is loads you can do. You might want to try http://do-it.org.uk/, where a huge number of voluntary positions are advertised. Alternatively your local authority may have a central organisation that organises volunteering in the area (just google *your LA* and volunteering). Since you want to maybe do something with kids a local school may have something available? Or if there is a leisure centre that has kids sports clubs on Saturday mornings it might be worth contacting them.

I do some volunteering, and I absolutely love it. At the moment I do quite a lot, but there are many roles that only require one-off commitments (eg. volunteering at events). I would be really surprised if you didn't find something to suit you (although being in London I realise I am often spoilt for choice).

Thanks all. I was also hoping to hear from anyone that had gone abroad and done some voluntary work. To hear about their experiences and recommendations

voluntary work can be good to put on your cv but quite a few places take the p1ss with volunteers.

they think that they can treat the volunteers like dirt, etc as though they where actually paid employees when they are not.!!!!!
  • While waiting for feedback from MSE people who have done voluntary work overseas, you could look at www.vso.org.uk/stories

Hi there, think a good starting point might be 'Volunteering Overseas' section in 'Do-it' (main page/click onto 'About Volunteering' on the left / click onto 'Volunteering Overseas' in the right hand box - would put the direct link in but it won't let me!). It gives some general info/advice on what to think about and links to specific types of volunteering opportunities abroad. Great idea, by the way, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Is that the case? I have never heard of that, and it certainly hasn't been my experience at all.

Care of any kind. If you've not done it before it can be very enlightening. Also very commendable. Involves a varying skill set, too.
