9 Yr old Renault Scenic...best way to dispose

of car in Northern Ireland (posted on main forum as well)

unfortunately too young for scrappage (unless I go for a Nissan) so whats the best way to dispose of this car. I wont get anything on a trade in, needs a few bits done, still taxed to Sept this year and MOTed til Feb 2010....

1.9 diesel, still got 4 good tyres, slight problem with driver seat (1 mounting point broken, possible weld job or new bolt fixing) and the only other problem, slight weeping of oil underneath...just a few drops daily.

Bodywork as you would expect for a car this age, but engine still has loads of life in it. Twin sun roofs, electric windows, mirrors, locking ...fog lights etc.

Can I reasonably expect someone to shell out a few quid for this...or do I have to pay to have it scrapped?

all thoughts welcome...

I would stick it on Gumtree or www.ulstertrader.com both free and describe it just as you have above. 00 ones on there are fetching over £1000

Autotrader is doing a deal for £10 (cars under £1000) to advertise on its website for 2 weeks. Its by far the largest selling site

you could put it on a classified ad on ebay , £12.99 for 28 days no other fees to pay. Describe all faults and invite viewings. I sold an s reg scenic a couple of months ago for £800! I'm sure you could get a few hundred for it.

drive it up the shankill or the falls, get out, leave the keys in it and the engine running and wait 5 minutes until it is stolen and then problem solved lol

    Burn it ...

Only joking chum, do you honestly believe that nobody would be interested in a 9yr old motor though? Seriusly that's slightly upity and on any other forum would justify you getting off hand replies but given that this is a money saving forum, then get the car on Autotrader for sub £1000 and get yourself a few pounds back in your pocket. 6 months MOT & a months Tax means the cars got to be worth £4-500

Take it up the Falls, it would only take 2 minutes for it to be burnt "lol"

how do you know you won't get anything on trade in? I took a 13 year old Peugeot 106 with no MOT on it and got a few hundred quid off the car I was changing to - by the way I had to replace a fixing bolt on the driver seat on it, got a mate to do it, had to buy a tool for releasing the seat so he could put a new one in, but it was very inexpensive less than £100

also if someone was looking to buy a new car they'd be making a profit by buying yours, holding it for a year and then getting £2k from the scrappage scheme when your car turns 10 - not often you make a profit on used cars lol!! - is it not worth holding on a little longer? or is there an expiry date on the scrappage scheme? the fact its a diesel will make it valuable to some people as generally the engines will just keep going and going....

    just some thoughts......

Scarppage scheme dictates that you must have owned the car you are scrapping for at least 12 months before scrapping it, the car must be over 10yr old and the scheme finishes in March, so not possible to sell it to someone else for their gain ... however, if it is going to be 10yr old before next March & you knew someone looking to buy a new motor, then "technically" you could trade the car in against the new motor and once it's bought change the tax book over to the real owners name giving them £2k off a new car (less your small commission ;))
