JackieO - your mum sounds lovely :)

She was, God rest her, a tiny 5ft nothing little fierce Scotwoman who yelled in defiance at the planes that roared overhead as we were bombed out for the second time in two years. She was dug out clutching her three kids and her beloved big brown wireless that she polished daily until the day she died in 1962.She was strict with us kids, but would walk through fire for us all, and I suspect many times she gave to us children and did without herself.I only have to smell 4711 colongne or Robin starch to remember her very clearly as that was what she seemed to smell of most of the time

I was fed mashed parsnips with bit of banana flavouring for years and told they were mashed bananas

As I never saw or tasted a real banana how would I know my mum was doing her best for us with what there was?

I only found out when I was older & mum "fessed up" once rationing ceased
