Student Tax rebate

Options
Hi Guys just looking for some advice/reassurance.

I am a uni student. I had a part time job in Sainsbury's between September 2005 and March 2008.

I left in early March 2008 because my course requires a year in work placement relvent to my course. I had planned to start in May/June 08.

Due to the Credit crunch i didn't obtain a placement until November 2008, and during the time between March and November i didn't have a job.

I have been paying what i think is full income Tax since November until my last paycheck in July.

I asked my employer for a copy of my P60 and i called the local Tax office to ask if i was due a rebate, and they said to send my P60 and a covering letter to them. I did this on 26th June and am currently waiting the 8-10 weeks they ask.

Do you think i am due any tax back? I've been paying roughly £100 a month in tax, for the 5 months i have been working in the last financial year (08-09), and i've been paying the same for the first 4 months of the current financial year even though my contract ends at the end of August.

Hopefully that all makes sense. Thanks for any assistance! :money:

    Depends how much you earnt.

You will not get National Insurance back. If you earnt less than your personal allowance you will get income tax back.

    £6,035 – Personal Tax allowance 08/09
£5209 – Earned in 08/09 tax year (gross)
That's what i've calculated as my earnings for the tax year past

    £6,475 – Personal tax allowance 09/10
    £5209 – Earned in 08/09 tax year
This is what I Will earn up to the end of August when my contract ends.

I've been paying ~£100 per month in income Tax

Tax code is 647L for this year, 603L for last year

I get paid each month, so the actual amount can vary depending on the month

So they take tax based on what you might earn? For all i know i might not get a job when i leave my current posisiton , so should i get the tax back for this year too or will i have to apply for it next year?

If you paid £100pm in tax for 5 months you should get this back as your refund.

Neither you nor HMRC know if you will get a job or keep your job so yes if you earn over £540pm approx this tax year you will pay tax. You will be able to apply for a rebate next April.

Firstly, if you left in EARLY March 2008 and not end March (untaken hols etc) then you may have a small rebate from the tax yr 07/08. Also to be paying tax every month you were employed from Nov 08 then you must have been paying tax using a week1/month1 code. Were you not asked for your P45 from your previous job or asked to fill in a P46. There should be no requirement to send in your P60 as your employer should already have sent in a form almost identical to a P60 (a P14 I think). Either way, unless you have earnings you didn't mention here, I believe you should get ALL the tax paid back if your figures are correct. Just shows it pays to check your tax code whilst still in employment as the refund within a tax year is much easier. One of the things they don't teach you at school (I believe they should!)

Forgot to mention if you were signing on then THEY should have given you a P45 which would show what they were counting as earnings for the early part of the year!
