Probably too late for you to think about this, but depending on how long you're travelling for, you might find it more convenient to 'make it up as you go along' and buy flights or other transport as you need. This may make it a bit more expensive than a round the world ticket but gives you a lot more flexibility in your travel plans and you can of course change direction and go somewhere completely different half way through.
(Generally you need an onward ticket out of the country you are just arriving in but sometimes you may be taking a boat/bus/train out of the country not a flight and going onwards rather than returning the way you came...)
(If there's any 'travel tips' I can give you, please just ask, though admittedly I didn't get to Thailand, didn't pass through USA or S.Africa... so maybe a bit useless to you then! I so want to be travelling again. You'll have a fantastic time.)#96 of the Norn Iron Club

We got ours from STA a few years back and was well worth the money saved us loads on what it would have cost us to get them all individually. We made a few changes along the way and only cost us a small amount per change. Our flights where with BA and Quantas.
However as Sor says price it out yourself just to see what they come to.0 -
