Help - can't choose between 2 laptops

We have got a £700 card from our insurance co to replace a stolen HP laptop. Have to use it at currys or pc world. We have browsed but can't decide between these 2.

The HP for £700 or the Acer with bluray for £600.http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1915400692.1249213551@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfjadehllhgjlgcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&fm=1&sm=0&tm=0&sku=685101&category_oid=-34014

www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_6920G-593G25Mn_LX.APQ0X.679/version.asp?PID=413

It will primarily be used for editing photos taken on a digital SLR & home camcorder recordings but also gets used for watching dvds occasionally.

Any comments gratefully received. Thanks.

you have an extra URL in your 2nd link

i dont see blueray on the acer? bluetooth yes but no ray

the acer has less ram but you can get 2gb for about £20 so no biggie
half the hard drive space of the HP but does have a slightly larger screen
  • If you can afford to pay an extra £30 then the HP looks very nice:

If not then I'd go for:

  • They are both pretty good, if I was spending that much I'd definitely check out the reviews. the most important thing at this point seems to be picking the most reliable one, not the spec (as they will pretty much do most things you want). A lot of laptops have problems, so its worth googling them before you buy

    Curry and PCworld again.....

Is it me or are people suckers for punishment?
Taken in by sales pitches based on "features" that either cost nothing or are already fitted to every computer on the market. Or the extra's they try to sell you which are worth nothing.... Like the extended warranty which they won't honor until you spend £50+ on their support line trying to convince them you haven't buggared it up yourself.

For NEW laptops, id be inclined to go with Dell. (but for a desktop, id build my own everytime)

Oh and for editing photo's from a digital SLR, you won't be doing the photo's justice by trying to edit them on a laptop..... You need a desktop with a good expensive large resolution monitor that has a good contrast ratio and colour depth, you then need a decent software package because nothing you'll get bundled for free is going to hack it.

On the subject of which, when you buy from high street retailers, your lovely new pc/laptop comes bundled with useless software that you thought was great in the sales pitch, but you'll never actually use.

    Thanks folks for your thoughts.

Strider - I do agree with you. I'd never buy from these places but stuffing insurance co's rarely pay out hard cash nowadays.

Must admit hadn't thought of replacing desktop unit. Need a new one anyway & then get a cheaper lappie for however can't get near the main pc cos my DH is playing with his photos:rotfl:

    Ahhhhhhh I see!

    Sorry, I do apologise!

The red mist tends to descend when people talk about buying from those shops, because I deal with so many people who could have gotten far better deals/treatment/support had they not gone there.

I recently set up in business and part of the reason for that was to bring about a little fairness and choice to the domestic IT services trade.... It is soooo endlessly frustrating that people trust the big neon signs so much over the little guy that's just genuinely trying to do a good job for them. Ah well! :)

Spend another £49 and get yourself an Apple MacBook.

They're excellent for photo and video editing, and they come with iPhoto and iMovie, as well as all the other iLife software.
