in Cutting tax
I've been given a P11D from my employer for 2008-09, but it's not correct. It includes details of a lease car I had, but the car was returned on the 3rd April 2009, but the P11D doesn't include that return date. I've told my employer, but they just say that the car was returned in 2009-10, but isn't 3rd April 2009 in the 2008-09 tax year? I don't know what to do when I come to fill in my tax return - do I use the figures given by my employer, even though they're incorrect, or the actual ones? I'm not really bothered about the tax value, just want to complete the form correctly.

argue with your employer again!
the P11D will have been copied to the tax office so if you use incorrect rates the discrepancy should stand out.0 -
Thanks - I'll get back to them again. I am right though aren't I? The form even says in the notes - return date to be completed if the car was returned before 6th April 2009.0

Many companies use 31 March as the tax year end for the purposes of reporting expenses and benefits. Strictly this is wrong but HMRC doesn't normally have a problem with this, as any benefits or expenses will not be greatly affected - obviously they want the correct details if these are materially affected.
In your case there is a (fairly small) over statement of benefits and you should get back to your employer, referring them to HMRC booklet 480, which is available online. The 480 is the taxman's bible in so far as expenses and benefits are required.0 -
Thanks amf - that's probably what they've done, as they did say it was returned in 2009-10 even when I pointed out the exact date. As I say, I'm not bothered about any tax difference, it will only be a few pounds, but didn't want to get into trouble with the taxman. I'll ask my employer for a new one again, but if they still won't give me one, I'll just leave it as it is.0

The only problem with this is that if you no longer have a car or have a different car, unless the company completed form P46 car (and I know many companies don't), your tax code for this year will be calculated on the last car on the P11D and you might well under or overpay tax...
What was the hire car and what did you get instead of it after you returned it?0
