What's the matter with my loo?

My upstairs toilet is getting harder and harder to flush - you virtually have to break your wrist to 'pump' the handle enough to get it to flush properly, tho' when it does, the flush itself is fine. Bearing in mind that I'm a DIY idiot, does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

If it is a conventional flush mechanism I would say the piece of plastic which lifts the water into the syphon has disintegrated. You'll need a new syphon assembly. You can get one from any DIY place or builder/plumbing merchant.

maybe the bit that connects the flush bit to the handle bit is loose - this happened to us and you had to take the lid off the loo and reach in fo rhte ltille hook that lifts the flushy release thing to get the loo to flush.

Sounds like you need a new toilet.

If your not feeling too flushed (ahem), they can be bought cheap enough at the likes of B&Q.

You can buy a new toilet which will be maybe £50 minimum, you can buy a new syphon unit which will be around £10 from B&Q or you can make a plastic disc which will take you an hour or two of fiddling around, or you can go to your local plumbers and buy the plastic washer for around 50p, but no matter which option (ignoring the new toilet) if yours is close coupled you will most likely need a close coupling kit comprising two screws and nuts, a metal plate and a rubber gasket which will cost around £4 but to be sure take the old one apart first and take the plastic washer with you.... should be fixed for under a fiver.
