Bankruptcy headache

I owe £17000 unsecured. I have no assets! Car only worth £250 and no house. Problem is I have been offered a job by my local council just as I'am about to declare myself Bankrupt! I got made redundant and cant pay the loans. I'am currently unemployed but will I be able to work for the council if I go Banrupt. Cheers MITMANIA

  • Depends on what job you are doing, most of the time you should be ok, do you have your contract?

You only have to tell them you're bankrupt if they ask. It shouldn't affect the job though.

Do you know who the union will be that will cover the role?? Phone them and ask.

In the application for the position did it pose the question? Do you have the job contract yet and does it mention BR?

Only, generally, positions that are FSA regulated you are certainly unable to be a BR whilst working. Most employers do not care, but its one of those things that you should declare as they may need to know (open to blackmail etc and they want to avoid it) if they ask in things such as contracts etc.
  • check your contract - i am going BR on 28th August and was worried as my company is FSA regulated although my role isn't - i've just checked my contract and it doesn't say anything about BR - unless they can hang it on me for gross misconduct which i doubt. Anyway the only way they will know is through the nil tax code or a specific search in the papers.

    Definitely ask the union etc
  • Thanks for the help will contact the union cheers!!
  • I was told I wouldnt be able to work for the council.(housing officer) I also read it on the insolvency website.
  • When I go bankrupt. What are the best banks to go to for a new account? I have heard its really hard to get one and I will need to have one for wages etc?

You can get a Co-op Cashminder which you can open over the phone or a Barclays Cash account which you need to go into branch to open.
