Mortgage and divorce

Hello,
I have a question which I'm hoping some of you moneysavers might be able to help me with or have found yourselves in the same situation.
My partner is in the process of getting divorced and currently has a joint mortgage with his ex wife. He wants to remove his name from the mortgage to enable him to be able to buy his own home but his ex wife is refusing to take the mortgage on herself. She works part time and her earnings mean that she couldn't have a sole mortgage, however there are some mortgage providers which will take into consideration her benefits etc. She can afford the mortgage as has been paying it for the past 6-12months. She's refusing to look into any other mortgage options and won't agree to an equity share settlement either.
This is the last thing holding up their divorce proceedings as the childcare and other financial matters have been agreed.
My partner is considering a forced sale on the house but as there are children involved, the liklihood is that a judge wouldn't agree it.
Has anyone else been in this situation and can offer some advice on what other options there are, if any?
I am currently unemployed and would be happy to get a mortgage on my own but until i'm employed and have a salary which allows me to do this we are stuck renting for the foreseeable future.
Any advice or tips would be appreciated.
Thanks,

How much is the outstanding mortgage?
Property value?
Any idea of what sort of income your partner's ex is on, what sort of benefits does she receive? If it is child related what ages are the children?

He can't just chooose to have his name taken off the mortgage, or ask his wife to take on the whole mortgage in her sole name. If his wife won't buy him out of the mortgage he will either have to find someone else that will or keep on himself.poppy100
